I know many people in their 40’s-60’s just like you who have aches or pains, and don’t know what to do about them. I know this because I hear it all the time! It can be incredibly frustrating when pain is stopping you from doing the things that you love. Below are 4 tips to follow to help minimize aches or pains:
Keep Moving Your Body (…. Gently)
It’s very normal to have a fear of moving when you’re experiencing aches or pains, as it’s easy to assume that you are doing more harm than good. However, moving is a good thing, especially those that make you feel good. The important part is that the movement should NOT cause you any aches or pain, in fact, you will often feel better afterwards. Any activity that increases your heart rate over 80 beats per minute is a great way of getting good blood flow throughout the body, helping with tissue healing. This could be as simple as walking, stationary bike or yoga, to name a few.
Start Prioritizing Sleep
The amount and quality of sleep that you get can make a big difference in how you feel. Sleep is your body’s way of recharging its battery. Getting good quality sleep ensures your body has a good capacity to heal and can minimize the feeling of aches or pains. If you find it difficult to wind down at the end of the day, developing a night time routine that is calming and relaxing can be helpful.
Don’t Forget to Drink Water
This is a BIG mistake that could be zapping your energy. One really simple way to avoid this is to cut out the stuff that makes you dehydrated in the first place, such as excessive coffee, tea, alcohol and energy drinks. Being dehydrated can cause muscle aches or pain, fatigue and dizziness. Having the proper amount of water in our body can help to hydrate tissue and soften cartilage. My tip, drink water little and often throughout the day, about 8 cups of water per day.
Don’t Just Wait, Consult an Expert
There isn’t a faster way to END aches or pain than by going to see a physiotherapist. Getting to see a hands-on physiotherapist means you’re getting fast access to care that will soothe and relax tight aching muscles, loosen and lubricate stiff, stuck and painful joints, and strengthen your body so you can go back to doing the things that you love. You can often leave a good physiotherapy clinic with your concerns eased and pain reduced, inside 30-40 minutes. Combine all of the “tips” in this article with a trip to see a hands on private physiotherapist, and you will see a dramatic drop in the aches or pain you’re currently suffering from. Always ensure that you are getting 1-on-1 dedicated service from a physiotherapist to ensure optimal recovery. If your physiotherapist is seeing multiple people at the same time, they are unable to provide you with the personalized and dedicated service you need to ensure that your goals are being met.
