Knee pain is a common complaint, but the knee is a complicated piece of equipment – and the list of causes of knee pain is vast. Your knee pain may be from an obvious accident. Or a silent injury that has damaged the spongy cartilage that cushions and protects the joint or torn the stretchy ligaments that stop your knee from dislocating and twisting right off. But equally, it could be something different altogether like an infection, a degenerative joint disease like arthritis, bursitis, tendinitis or one of many other knee-related conditions. That’s why it’s super-important to have knee pain evaluated and the root cause identified by a physiotherapist.
The knee is a major joint in the body – and it’s under a lot of strain as it supports you through life: twisting, bending, stretching, and extending hundreds and thousands of times a day. But when things go wrong… there isn’t much you can do when your knee is out of action. Walking, standing, running, and playing sports can all cause intense pain. If your pain is mild, you can battle through the pain. Still, we wouldn't advise it because the knee is susceptible to irreversible damage, which may require surgery or total knee replacement further down the line.
It's not a natural part of getting older, either. Sure, our joints are prone to wear and tear as we age (if we don’t look after them – with physiotherapy, therapeutic exercise and staying active). But pain ISN’T normal.
You don’t have to limp through life.
But if you have been putting it off and ignoring the pain. Don’t worry. You’re not alone. We hear this from patients all the time.
And the most popular question all these patients ask is
“Why is This Happening to Me?”...
or
“Why Am I Still Suffering With Knee Pain After Putting Up With It For 6 Months (Maybe More)?”
Sadly, many patients believe that their knee pain is just going to get better on its own. That they "must have pulled something," and it'll be grand and good as new in a few days. But, unfortunately, things are likely to get worse, not better. Especially if you've been in pain for more than a week already, and you could be causing permanent damage.
Is This You?
Some patients try to reassure themselves by seeing their doctor. But in most cases, all they get is painkillers and instructions to rest and “take it easy” – and the fallback clause “come back and see me in 6 weeks if it doesn’t get better”.
But six weeks is a long time to rest. Wouldn't you rather spend that time healing, recovering, and building strength in your knee joint and the surrounding muscles? Especially as most people end up back in the doctor's waiting room after the six weeks is up, still in pain and with no real clue about what's going on inside their knee to cause the pain. So they get painkillers, further instructions to rest – maybe even a painful steroid injection into the knee and they're sent on their way again. Back and forwards over many months – and still no further forward.
It's crazy. It also explains why so many people aged 45+ have chronic KNEE PAIN and end up needing knee surgery. When it comes to knees, we believe in a proactive, not a reactive, approach.
Has This Happened to You?
So, what are some other reasons why your knee pain is lasting longer than it should do? Well, it could be information overload – due to different theories on the source of your pain. Many people (qualified and unqualified) – especially on the internet, are more than happy to give out advice on knee pain – but most of it isn't credible. And sometimes, it can be dangerous.
If you haven't injured your knee, you probably think the cause of your KNEE PAIN is something you did but don't remember, like overextending it on the tennis court or banging it somehow. But the most likely cause and the cause we often see in the Bellefleur clinics is weakness in the muscles surrounding the knees. Pushing yourself in the gym, the golf course or doing too much in the garden has just sped up the inevitable process.
If you're not an expert in KNEE PAIN, it can be confusing to determine what is wrong with your KNEE(S). That's why many people accept it as part of life and growing older, but it doesn't have to be like that.
Do You Feel Confused?
If You’re Currently Living With Knee Pain, Here are 7 Reasons Why It Could Be Lasting Longer Than It Should:
- You hoped it would go away - but it didn’t
- You went to see your doctor, who told you to take it easy and take NSAIDs - but the pills didn’t help your knee, and the pain came back as soon as the effects wore off
- Friends told you that "sore knees are all part of getting older," so you thought you should grin and bear it
- You tried other physiotherapists and healthcare professionals, but nothing they said or did gave any relief from the pain
- You tried knee exercises you found on YouTube, but they didn't help at all. You have more pain than before
- You tried resting – on doctor’s advice, but that just made your knee even more painful
- You decided to try a knee support bandage or brace, expecting it to help your knee pain. It helped a bit, but the pain came back as soon as you took it off, and it didn't fix the problem

What Can I do to Get Rid of My Knee Pain Quickly?...
Well, here's 4 things you can do:
- First, you need to decide to get help. So many people put it off for too long, believing that knee pain will "just get better on its own." But six months later, they're still enduring daily pain. It's no better – and sometimes it's even worse.
- Next, perform the CORRECT exercises – performing a series of therapeutic exercises is a great way to ease your knee pain, but you must do the right ones. A physiotherapist can teach you these exercises - the right way so you don't injure yourself further. After performing these exercises consistently, you'll be able to move your knee freely and easily again and reduce your pain levels.
- Stay active and mobile – Have you tried to get up and move around after a day spent on the sofa? Yes, your whole body feels stiff and tight, doesn't it? Too much rest can exacerbate all types of pain. It's more beneficial to keep your body and joints moving throughout the day to help keep blood and oxygen flowing.
- Get expert, “hands-on” physiotherapy – Physiotherapy is by far the best way to resolve chronic knee pain. At BELLEFLEUR PHYSIOTHERAPY, we help patients with knee pain reduce their pain and improve joint mobility every day. So if knee pain is affecting your career, your relationships and your ability to perform daily tasks or participate in sports/hobbies, we can help.
