Most episodes of neck and shoulder pain are due to muscle strain, soft tissue sprain (ligaments, tendons) or chronic stress and tension. Sudden force or movement like whiplash from a car accident or a baseball, hockey, or other sporting injuries can also cause pain in the neck and shoulder area. These types of neck and shoulder injuries often improve with time and non-surgical care, like Physiotherapy. But if NECK AND SHOULDER PAIN continues or worsens, there is usually a specific condition present that requires treatment.
Cervical degenerative disc disease, cervical herniated disc, cervical stenosis, and cervical arthritis can all cause NECK PAIN, limit your range of motion, and reduce overall physical function. With the shoulder, one of the most common causes of chronic pain is frozen shoulder – when the shoulder capsule is inflamed and stiff and “freezes” up.
We know how it feels.
Every twist or turn of your neck or raise of your arms feels sore. So you try to avoid moving at all, which causes all the muscles around the neck and shoulders to stiffen up and shorten until it turns into a vicious circle of pain, muscle spasms, immobility, and stiffness.
There is usually no apparent reason why it happens either, not that you can remember anyway. You just woke up one morning with the pain, right? And nothing seems to help. You've tried everything from expensive pillows to no pillows, rest to gentle stretching exercises and shoulder mobility exercises, but nothing is helping. And you’re beginning to think it’s never going to go away.
Don't fret. If that's you, you're not alone. We hear this type of thing all the time. NECK AND SHOULDER PAIN are one of the most common complaints we hear from patients who visit the BELLEFLEUR PHYSIOTHERAPY clinics.
And the most popular question all these patients ask is
“Why is This Happening to Me?”...
or
“Why Am I Still Suffering With Neck and Shoulder Pain After Putting Up With It For 6 Months and More?”
Most patients believe that their neck and shoulder pain is just going to go away on its own. That they'll open their eyes one morning, and the pain will have disappeared as fast as it arrived. Sadly, this is rarely true – and they've wasted six months of their life waiting for the pain to pass, but it got much worse instead.
Is This You?
Other patients tell us that they go to see their doctor, and they ask them to "take it easy," "take painkillers," and “come back and see me in 6 weeks”.
This advice isn't great, and these patients usually end up back in the doctor's waiting room in 6 weeks in even more pain than they were in before. But still, the advice is more rest and even more potent painkillers or, worse still, steroid injections. But you can't afford to take more time off work, and you're missing out on social occasions because you're in pain. It's madness. It also explains why so many people aged 45+ have chronic NECK and SHOULDER PAIN and suffer the side effects of too much pain medication.
Has This Happened to You?
Just like knee pain, there can be several reasons why your neck and shoulder pain lingers. One major culprit is information overload. The internet is flooded with advice on neck and shoulder pain, but much of it comes from unqualified sources and can be misleading or even dangerous.
Even if you haven't had a clear-cut injury, you might suspect you did something to cause the pain, like straining your neck while looking at your computer or sleeping in an awkward position. However, the underlying issue is often muscle weakness built up over time due to poor posture. That awkward twist, lift, or sleeping position might have just been the tipping point.
Without expertise in neck and shoulder pain, it's easy to feel lost and accept the pain as inevitable. But it doesn't have to be that way!
Do You Feel Confused?
If You’re Currently Living With Neck and Shoulder Pain, Here are 7 Reasons Why It Could Be Lasting Longer Than It Should:
- You expected it to go away - but it didn’t
- You went to see your doctor, who told you to take it easy and take NSAIDs - but the pills didn’t help your neck or shoulder, and the pain came back as soon as the effects wore off
- Friends told you that "we all get aches and pains when we get older," so you thought you should grin and bear it
- You tried other physiotherapists and healthcare professionals, but nothing they said or did gave any relief from the pain
- You tried stretching exercises you found on YouTube, but they didn't help at all. You have more pain than before
- You tried resting – on doctor’s advice, but that just made your muscles even tighter and the pain even worse
- You decided to try a "massage" once a week, expecting to help soothe your pain. It was relaxing and helped for a while, but the pain came back soon enough, and it didn't fix the problem

What Can I do to Get Rid of My Neck or Shoulder Pain Quickly?...
Well, here's 4 things you can do:
- First, you need to decide to get help. So many people put it off for too long, believing that the pain will "just get better on its own." But six months later, they're still enduring daily pain. It's no better – and sometimes it's even worse.
- Next, perform the CORRECT exercises – performing a series of therapeutic exercises is a great way to ease your neck or shoulder pain, but you must do the right ones. A physiotherapist can teach you these exercises - the right way so you don't injure yourself further. After performing these exercises consistently, you'll be able to move your neck and shoulders freely and easily again and reduce your pain levels.
- Stay active and mobile – Have you tried to get up and move around after a day spent on the sofa? Yes, your whole body feels stiff and tight, doesn't it? Too much rest can exacerbate all types of pain. Particularly neck pain – if you rest in an awkward position or twist to see the TV or computer screen. It's more beneficial to keep your body, neck and shoulders moving throughout the day to keep blood and oxygen flowing.
- Get expert, “hands-on” physiotherapy – Physiotherapy is by far the best way to resolve chronic neck and shoulder pain. At BELLEFLEUR PHYSIOTHERAPY, we help patients with neck and shoulder pain reduce their pain and improve mobility every day. So if pain is affecting your career, your relationships and your ability to perform daily tasks or participate in sports/hobbies, we can help.
