Postnatal & Pelvic Floor Programs

The pelvic floor is made up of several muscles that support the bladder, bowel and the uterus. Coordinated contracting and relaxing of the pelvic floor muscles control bowel and bladder functions - the pelvic floor must relax to allow for urination, bowel movements, and sexual intercourse.

Pelvic floor dysfunction occurs when there is either too much tension on the pelvic floor muscles (high tone) or not enough (low tone) contributing to urinary incontinence, constipation, pain during intercourse or pain in the lower back, pelvic region, genitals or rectum. Other complications may also include, pelvic organ prolapse, separation of the abdominal muscles (diastasis recti).

There are many things that may contribute to pelvic floor dysfunction over time, including:

  • Pregnancy and childbirth
  • Surgery
  • Straining on the toilet
  • Chronic coughing
  • Heavy lifting
  • High impact exercise
  • Age (menopause)

Some Health Benefits of Exercise for those Suffering from Pelvic Floor Dysfunction:

  • Improve bladder and bowel function
  • Improve recovery from childbirth and gynaecological surgery
  • Strengthen the core and deep abdominal muscles
  • Increase sexual sensation and reduce pain
  • Help reduce your risk of pregnancy complications
  • Increase social confidence and quality of life

Always consult with your healthcare provider before starting any exercise program. Whether or not you are able to exercise during your pregnancy depends on individual factors.
